What is facial or neck liposuction?

During a facial liposuction or neck liposuction procedure, Dr. Friedman removes fat to resculpt the contours of your face or neck. Also known as submental liposuction, submental lipectomy, neck lift, or facial lipocontouring, this treatment is similar to traditional liposuction.

The main distinction in facial liposuction is that Dr. Friedman removes fat from your face and neck rather than your body. Often he will use the removed fat from your own body to fill other areas of the face that are deficient in fat volume, thereby rejuvenating your face and eyelid area.

The most commonly treated areas for facial liposuction include:

It's an incredibly useful procedure for eliminating fat that's more difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise and can help to resculpt your neck and jawline by eliminating a double chin, jowls, or neck.

What does facial liposuction entail?

During your consultation, you and Dr. Friedman discuss your aesthetic goals, and Dr. Friedman examines your facial anatomy to assess what results you can expect from facial liposuction. He custom-designs your treatment so that it’s tailored to your particular needs and preferences.

The actual procedure takes less than an hour and is performed with light sedation and a local anesthetic on an out-patient basis, meaning you can go home on the same day as your surgery.

Once you’re anesthetized, Dr. Friedman makes a few strategically placed tiny incisions. Depending on what facial areas you’re targeting with the liposuction, he might make the incisions in the natural skin folds behind your ears, underneath your chin, or inside of your inner lower lip. The incisions are nearly invisible.

He then inserts a small tube, called a cannula, that breaks up and vacuums out the fat in your target area. Dr. Friedman might also emulsify the fat before removing it, using ultrasound-, laser, or water-assisted liposuction tools.

Once the fat is removed, he closes up your incisions and sends you home to heal.

What is the recovery for facial liposuction?

Recovery from facial liposuction typically takes between seven and ten days. You might experience some mild pain and discomfort, but nothing that can’t be comforted with over-the-counter pain medications or prescription pain medicine. 

You’ll likely experience mild swelling and bruising in your treatment areas, and you might need to wear a compression garment on your face overnight for a few weeks.
